Hey, I'm Ray Hornback...
With over 15 years of experience as a Master Hairstylist, salon owner, and nationally recognized educator, I know what it takes to succeed behind the chair.
When I first stepped out of hair school, I felt totally unprepared for real life behind the chair. I knew the basics, but when it came to cutting, I often felt lost.
Most of my training focused on color theory and product knowledge, while haircutting education was surprisingly limited. Short haircuts felt especially intimidating — there’s real pressure to get them right, and you can’t hide mistakes behind long layers.
So I got to work. I invested in advanced training, spent years refining my craft behind the chair, and eventually developed the system I wish I had when I was starting out — clear, modern, visual, and practical.
That system became the foundation of my haircutting education at Bob University, and mastering short haircutting completely changed my career.

Do I Have to get Certified?
Nope! Certification is totally optional.
If you just want access to the training videos, live classes, and community—you’re good to go with the regular membership.
But if you’re ready to go all-in, have built in trust, charge more for your cuts, and market yourself as certified in modern short hair, the option is there when you’re ready.
How Much Time Does it Take Each Week?
That’s up to you! Some stylists binge-watch videos on their day off. Others watch one cut per week and practice between clients.
We recommend setting aside at least 1-2 hours a week to really get the most out of your membership, but you can go faster or slower depending on your schedule. The video tutorials are short and bite sized, so you can fit them in when you have time. 2-6 minutes is the average length per tutorial. I designed the course work for the very busy stylist who is trying to juggle a lot. If that's you, you're in the right place.
Is this for Beginning or Advanced Stylists?

Do I Need any Special Tools or Equipment?
Nope! We’ll show you the best tools to use for each haircut, but you probably already have most of what you need in your kit.
We do recommend using high-quality haircutting scissors. You'll also want to have a high quality mannequin. Cheap Amazon mannequins will delivery poor results and leave you feeling frustrated. I will send a list of my favorite supplies when you sign up, but most stylists are able to start with what they are currently using.
Does BOB U Training count toward my State CEU credits?
BOB University is not yet officially CEU accredited, but we are working towards this! You can and should check with your state to see if they would count your education toward your CEU credits.
Can Salon Owners Use BOB University For Their Salon Haircutting Education?
Yes! We work with salons and have team pricing available.
